Understanding your fees and charges

Residential Aged Care

If you’re considering residential aged care, it’s important to understand whether you are eligible for government support.

1
Low Means Fully Supported (Govt funded)
The government may pay for your accommodation and care costs, so you’ll only need to pay the basic daily care fee.
2
Low means partly supported (Govt contribution)
If you are only eligible for partial funding, the government will contribute to your accommodation costs and you’ll also need to pay the basic daily care fee.
3
Self-funded
If you don’t qualify for government funding, you’ll need to pay the accommodation and basic daily care fee. Your financial assessment conducted by Services Australia will determine whether you are also required to contribute to the Hotelling Supplement and Non-Clinical Care Contribution (NCCC).

Your eligibility for funded care

To find out if you’re eligible for residential aged care funding from the Australian Government, you’ll need an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment.

The ACAT is a completely independent (and free) service. Visit My Aged Care or call 1800 200 422 to get started.

If you are looking for a permanent home, you’ll also need to complete a financial assessment with Services Australia to determine how much you may need to contribute towards your accommodation.

Funding options Residential Aged Care

What will it cost?

When you are considering Residential Aged Care, it’s important to understand what you might need to cover financially in terms of your accommodation, care and daily living.

Accommodation costs

The accommodation payment covers the cost of your residential accommodation and is based on the type of room you choose. For pricing, please contact us on 1300 22 11 22 or visit your local residential aged care home.

After you've received your financial assessment outcome, you will have up to 28 days from your moving in date to confirm how you'd like to pay. There are three ways you can choose to pay for your accommodation:

Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD)

Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD)

A lump sum accommodation payment that is refunded to you when you leave, minus any amounts owed under the resident agreement and retentions. Under the New Aged Care Act, aged care providers will retain 2% of the lump sum amount each year for a maximum of 5 years. The retention is calculated daily and deducted monthly.

Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP)

Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP)

A daily accommodation payment, indexed to CPI every 6 months.

Combination

Combination

An apportioned combination of the RAD and DAP payment options.

Care fees

The basic daily care fee

This payment applies to all residents and covers living costs such as meals, laundry and utilities. The fee is set at 85% of the single pension rate of the basic age care pension.

A means tested care fee

If the government determines that you are able to contribute towards the costs of your care, you’ll be asked to pay these fees. Services Australia will advise the fee type and amount for each resident based on your residential aged care means assessment.

Means Tested Contributions that may apply to new aged care residents from 1 Nov 2025:

Hotelling Supplement Contribution (HSC)

This supplement covers daily living expenses such as cleaning, meals, and laundry — over and above the basic daily fee.

Non-Clinical Care Contribution (NCCC)

This contribution covers non-clinical services such as bathing, mobility assistance and lifestyle activities. There is a maximum daily cap on this contribution.

The following information applies to:

Incoming aged care residents that:

a) have been approved for Home Care prior to 12 September 2024; or

b) entered residential aged care with a different provider prior to 1 November 2025 and transferring to Bolton Clarke

You will not be required to pay the Hotelling Contribution or the Non-Clinical Care Contribution but may be required to pay the fees under the Means Tested Care Fee, subject to your means assessment.

Higher Eeryday Living Fee (HELF)

The Higher Everyday Living Fee (HELF) is an optional fee for services that residents may choose to select. These services are of a higher quality or in addition to the standard everyday living services provided in residential aged care.
